How to prevent Malware/Trojans
How can I prevent myself from being infected by malware? Some malware takes advantage of vulnerabilities in your computer’s operating system (e.g. Windows) or your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer). To protect against these vulnerabilities, ensure that you are using the latest version of your computer’s operating system. It is also essential that you download any updates (also known as ‘security updates’ or ‘patches’) for your browser and operating system.
Most operating system and browser providers will offer you an automatic update option; you can also download updates directly from their websites.
Just as you can protect your house with locks on windows and doors, and a burglar alarm, it is important that you protect your computer:
- Treat all unsolicited emails (especially those from unknown senders) with caution and never click on links in these emails.

- Be careful when you download executable files (.exe) or zip files (.zip) from the internet or via email. If you download files from unofficial websites, your computer may be at a higher risk from a malware infection.

- Many browsers and anti-virus products will warn you when you attempt to visit a website that may be harmful to your computer. Always take notice of these alerts and avoid visiting these websites.

- It is always safer to read messages in 'plain text' only. The email program you use, for example Microsoft Outlook, provides this option.

- If you detect a Trojan on your computer, you should try and remove it using anti-virus software, or seek the support from your computer or software supplier. If you have used any online banking services recently, you should contact your bank so that they can ensure that steps are taken to protect your accounts from fraud.

- If you receive any suspicious emails or you think you've seen an email that may be part of a Trojan scam you can send us a copy of the email.
